THE Monbulk Primary School community has been left reeling following two consecutive weekends of vandalism.
Following the first break-in on the weekend of 24-25 August where vandals cut through a fence and broke windows in the senior student toilets, they struck again on 31 August and 1 September weekend.
School principal Ray Yates said in the latest incident the vandals cut through the fence and smashed two mirrors in the toilets.
He said whoever did it was probably an opportunist looking to damage something because nothing was stolen.
“The damage is rather minor, it’s more cost involved, which will set the school back about $800 all together,” he said.
“Having it over one week is bad enough but having it over two weeks is a sobering reflection on what’s happening in society.
“I hope it’s only a temporary aberration but I wouldn’t like to think it’s continuing.”
School captains Hayden and Lily said they were very disappointed to see their school damaged.
“I don’t really feel so happy about it, especially with the basketball ring, they ripped the sandbags so we don’t have anything to hold the ring up, we normally use it every play,” Hayden said.
“I don’t see the point of vandalising a school or anything really, it’s a bit silly,” Lily said.
Mr Yates said their opinions were reflected throughout the whole school community and hoped whoever was doing the damage would stop.
“I think it’s disappointing that this happened,” he said.
“It’s sad that they find joy in breaking mirrors and breaking into the school, because they would’ve been at some school themselves at a similar age.”
