THE Upper Ferntree Gully Angliss Auxiliary’s ‘Plant Man’ has retired from the plant fair after more than 20 years on the job.
John Bennett was a regular at the Ferntree Gully Market, selling plants as part of his Wesburn nursery since 1964.
He was first approached by the auxiliary to run a plant fair at the Ferntree Gully Bowling Club Charity day, which raised $600.
Since then, the fairs were run from The Angliss hospital.
Auxiliary secretary Maxine Lane said Mr Bennett had done about four fairs per year, always arrived before 9am to set up and left after 4pm.
“Over the years, despite having one stroke, he hasn’t missed a beat, even helping others who have had strokes when he has had the chance,” she said.
“The money that is estimated that these plant fairs have brought in to the Upper Ferntree Gully Angliss Auxiliary, of which he is a member, is $17,444, which is excellent as The Angliss is not a huge hospital and most of the staff are the buyers.”
For his efforts, the auxiliary presented him with a certificate of appreciation.
Mr Bennett, who was humble and reluctant to receive the award, said he enjoyed his time with the auxiliary.
Ms Lane said they appreciated all his hard work.
“We wish John all the best in his retirement, he takes with him our deep appreciation and we extend our thanks to all his many contacts who also never failed to step up when he asked for their assistance,” she said.
“He will be missed by all his customers and friends.”
