Cardinia comes clean

By ANEEKA SIMONIS

CARDINIA Shire Council is helping residents clean up around the home with a number of waste collections and drop-offs being organised before winter sets in.
From late April through to the end of May, Cardinia Shire residents will be encouraged to dispose of unwanted electrical goods, household chemicals as well as green and hard waste.
E-waste, including computers, televisions, kitchen appliances and radios can be dropped at the council depot on Purton Road, Pakenham, on Saturday 26 April between 9am-2pm.
Agriculture and veterinary chemical users can also recycle their empty and cleaned drumMUSTER containers at the council’s Pakenham depot from 10am to noon on the same day.
Hard and green waste will be collected between Monday 28 April and Friday 30 May. Items are to be placed on their kerb by 6am on the Monday of their collection week or two days beforehand.
Residents will be notified of their collection week or can look it up on the community compass tool on the council’s website.
The council is also providing a free chemical detox, helping to dispose of a number of items such as fertiliser, fuel, pool chemicals, paint, cleaning products and more.
Sponsored by Sustainability Victoria, Detox your Home mobile collections will occur on Saturday 3 May. Registrations can be made through the council’s website. Cardinia Shire disposes of more than 16,000 tonnes of landfill waste each year. High levels of waste disposal can be costly for residents and the environment. To help save money and reduce landfill contribution, the council is offering a $30 rebate to those who swap their 120-litre bin for an 80-litre bin.
