WORKSAFE is investigating after a jacked-up Mount Evelyn house slipped, creating a hazardous gas leak.
A gas warning was issued by the CFA at 7.53am today after crews were called to the Currajong Avenue property after the occupants woke to find their bedroom filled with gas.
Mount Evelyn CFA First Lieutenant Rick Ventrella attended the scene and said on arrival crews found the gas readings inside the house to be extremely high.
“We were unable to locate the gas meter as the house had slid on top of it,” he said.
Mr Ventrella said gas and power crews attended the scene.
“Gas crews struggled to locate the gas line coming into the house and had to call an excavator – after 45 minutes the leak was found, capped and the scene made safe,” he said.
“We found electrical wires from the street had been pulled off the house due to the movement and were hanging close to the gas leak but the electricity was isolated as soon as crews arrived.
Mr Ventrella said Worksafe was notified and the job had now been handed over to them to investigate.
“The whole house had shifted – the place was on jacks ready to be re-stumped and during the evening it’s slid to the left-hand side, rupturing the gas main,” he said.
“The left-hand side of the building has opened up due to the movement.
“The area is now deemed safe, however the occupants of the house are not allowed to enter the building.”
No-one was injured.
