Smelly job for CFA

By REBECCA BILLS

CFA crews have the extra stinky job of cleaning up a large amount of rubbish, after it caught fire inside a rubbish truck this afternoon.
Montrose CFA Fifth Lieutenant Tim Bishop said fire-fighters from Montrose and Mount Evelyn were called to the non-structural fire at approximately 1.30pm on the corner of Cambridge and Swansea Road.
“On arrival we found a garbage truck had dumped its contents of rubbish,” he said.
“It was emitting a lot of smoke over Swansea Road.
“We immediately started dousing the fire with as much water as we could.”
Mr Bishop said a large number of resources had to respond due to there being no water that they could tap into in the area.
“A Bobcat has been required on-scene to pull apart the pile to get into the hot spot of the rubbish,” he said.
“We hope that we will be out of here between half an hour to 40 minutes just before the peak traffic starts, so we can re-open the road.”
