Martin wins cup

By DENNIS FULLER

THE final round of the three-round Winter Cup was played at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday. Due to the fact that the rain tap had been left on for a couple of weeks, the second round was assigned to the too hard basket and the cup was played over two rounds.
Peter Clowes (16) led the field into the day’s play and stayed in the lead, but was joined by Ross Martin (13) on the last holes. Both players finished with 69 stableford points, so the countback system was activated and Martin emerged the Winter Cup winner.
These two were followed in by Dean Shannon (16) on 68 and Peter Glasscock (16) on 64. The rest had to proffer fairly weak excuses.
The daily comp and A Grade was won on a countback by Martin over Shannon when the both finished with 37 points with Broc Reynolds (14) next with 36 points.
B Grade was headed up by Ken Sumsion (25) when his 34 points was just enough to greet the judges.
Graeme White won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th on the 12th and 13th pin cash on the 18th.
The ladies Winter Cup was won by Brianna McCoy who showed sublime skills to kill off all opposition in quick smart time.
Wednesday’s Obliquely Faded Golf (OFG) was a stableford event that certainly suited the free swinging game of Ken Sumsion (24) when he conquered all with 39 points. Leigh Morison (20) and Sepp Krummenacher (20) were next with 37 points followed by Leigh Piggott (31) with 36.
Next Saturday is a chance for the members to line up to win the August VGL Monthly Medal.
John Fisher scooped the pool while Peter Glasscock finished his round with a flourish when he won the pro.
