‘MAIL’ readers have the chance to win one double-pass (two available) to see Blues ‘n’ Roots talent, Benny Walker.
The Indigenous singer-songwriter is touring throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria, which will include a performance at Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge on Thursday 4 August.
Hailing from Echuca, Walker has been making waves in the Australian music industry and gained airplay on Double J.
Walker last month unveiled his latest offering, a tune called ‘Oh no you don’t’.
The song was written at his Moama home and recorded at Way of the Eagle studios in Melbourne with ARIA award-winning producer, Jan Skubiszewski (The Cat Empire, John Butler Trio).
The song is a new direction for his music, according to Walker.
“The song is written as a triumph … over mental illness,” he said.
“Feeling that you’ve learnt to, for the most part, be one step ahead of anxiety, knowing the familiar warning signs and using your own experiences to deal with it.”
Musically, the song features a traditional pop-folk sound.
But it’s the lyrics and smooth vocals of Walker that give it a unique sound, one that is starting to win plenty of fans.
Walker was awarded the Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award for Best New Talent in 2012.
He has performed with some of the best in the industry, including Archie Roach, Blue King Brown, Tim Rogers, and Vika and Linda Bull.
