Renewed appeal to catch 1997 firebugs

A REWARD of up to $1 million is on offer for information leading to the apprehension/s and subsequent conviction/s over the 1997 fatal bushfires in Ferny Creek.
Arson and Explosive Squad detectives launched a renewed appeal on Tuesday 25 October, in an effort to encourage further public assistance.
On 21 January 1997, the bushfires claimed the lives of three people, destroyed 42 homes and damaged 45 more homes.
While in their Seabreeze Avenue home in Ferny Creek, husband and wife Graeme, 26, and Jennifer, 24, Lindroth – along with their neighbour Genevieve Erin, 50 – died when fire engulfed the house.
All three were found dead in the garage.
Despite extensive investigations and a reward on offer, no charges have been laid as yet.
Arson and Explosives Squad Inspector Michael Roberts said it was a horrific incident.
“We believe whoever lit those fires chose the perfect day and there was a definite intent to cause extensive damage,” he said.
“By making a renewed appeal to the public, and finding the person responsible for such senseless devastation, we are hoping to provide the families of the victims with some answers,” he said.
For information leading to the apprehension and subsequent conviction of the person or persons responsible for the suspicious fires, a reward of up to $1 million will be paid at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner of Police.
