Spreading the word about Billy

A small group of Puffing Billy volunteers has been busy spreading the word about the popular railway, as part of a speaker panel that has presented at more than 1500 clubs, groups and events.
The group started in the late 1980s, and member Don Horsburgh has been on the panel since 2000, recently giving his 600th speaking presentation.
“I’ve been volunteering at Puffing Billy since I retired in 1991 and have had many roles including a booking clerk, station master, retail assistant and managing special projects like the ‘Saving Puffing Billy’ book,” he said.
“In 2000, I joined the speakers panel so I could share some of my knowledge and passion with others in our community, before taking over the coordinator role in 2004.
“I really enjoy getting out there and meeting people.”
He said everyone loves Puffing Billy and people are always excited and enthusiastic to learn about its history and operations.
“We volunteer our time to speak at service clubs like Rotary and Probus, retirement villages, historical societies, schools, charity and not-for-profit groups, libraries, senior groups, special interest groups and on community radio.”
He said Puffing Billy has such a great story to tell.
The Puffing Billy speakers panel is available to provide free talks throughout the metropolitan and country areas of Victoria.
For further information, or to book a speaker, contact Don Horsburgh on 0411 027 732 or email dhorsbur@bigpond.net.au.
