Billanook Primary School will soon receive a SunSmart makeover, thanks to $429,000 in Victorian Government funding.
Through the School Pride and Sports Fund, the entrance of the school is set for a major redevelopment, complete with a shelter area, new pathway, stairs and a ramp into the school’s entrance.
The shelter will provide a sun-safe and weather-proof play area during school hours, as well as a covered area for students while waiting for buses, parents or carers.
In front of an enthusiastic group of students, Education Minister James Merlino announced the development will go ahead.
“When you’re waiting for pick-up after school, you’ll have a lovely shelter from the sun, and from the wind and the rain,” Mr Merlino said.
“This is a relatively small project, but one that is going to have a really big outcome.”
Mr Merlino said principal Julie Legione and school council had written a letter, asking for assistance for this project.
After hearing the announcement, Ms Legione said the school couldn’t be happier.
“This is a whole lot more, we aimed a lot lower than that. This is really thrilling that we’re going to get a whole new area,” she said.
“We get to put in some great plans and this gives us scope to do all sorts of exciting things.
“This was always high on our list, but we felt like it was too much for just fundraising; this will be wonderful.”
The latest announcement follows on from a 2016 grant of $8800 from the Inclusive Schools Fund, which was used to build an outdoor sensory area made up of a sensory trail, garden, outdoor kitchen and classroom.
