Students from five Yarra Ranges schools will hit the streets during terms three and four as part of the Free Range Kids program.
The Yarra Ranges Council initiative, delivered with Inspiro Community Health, aims to increase children’s daily activity and their ability to travel independently in their communities.
Schools will be encouraging students to walk to and from school.
Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the students taking part would learn how to navigate their way to and from school, develop resilience and independence and have more time to socialise with friends.
“All while gaining the health benefits that come with increased activity,” he said.
Cr Cox said school communities not taking part in the official program could still encourage families to walk to school.
“We can all take steps to encourage our kids to walk to school, whether it’s walking halfway with them, driving part of the way and letting them walk a smaller portion of the trip, or mapping out routes for them to take the whole journey,” he said.
“Walking to school is safe, healthy and a great way to improve their knowledge of and connection to their community.”
