Selby Tennis Club has expanded its social tennis matches to two nights a week due to popular demand from locals with the aim to have a casual hit and share a laugh.

Matches will be held on Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm with Ben, and Thursdays from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm with Peter.

Club President Anthony Sanders said the club is looking to create more availability for people to get onto the court and the matches are open to people of all skill levels.

“There’s quite a lot of interest in tennis itself, with ‘local heroes’ or great role models like Ash Barty and around this time of year, the Australian Open. It also has has a lot of flow on effects throughout the likes of term one,” Mr Sanders said.

“There’s no ongoing commitment. And it’s available for people to come and go as they please…

“Sometimes it’s a stress reliever from work. Other times, it’s people just wanting to feel like that they’ve got up off the couch and done something and everybody has a laugh and enjoys themselves at tennis,” Mr Sanders said.

While the club’s social tennis matches run all year round with breaks over the school holidays, Mr Sanders said it can be a bit challenging for players to get to the court on winter nights and people who are not feeling confident in their tennis skills should not be dismayed.

“Social tennis is a great way to get back into the sport,” he said.

“We do encourage people to sign up and become members. And then that leads to more ongoing commitment where they can play tennis with people they become familiar with within the community.”

Attendees are not required to have a membership to play socially, though a payment of $5 will be required on the night.

The matches are being held at the Selby Tennis Club on Charles St Corner, Mimosa Rd, Selby VIC 3159.
