ADVENTUROUS duo Emily and Martin are putting their faith in a 30-year-old Ford Meteor to get them across some of Australia’s most testing terrain.
After participating in a recent Shitbox Rally, the Monbulk couple enjoyed the experience so much they’ve signed up for the 2017 event, which aims to raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council.
The challenging roads and tracks of Lake Eyre, Oodnadatta (via the Oodnadatta track), Alice Springs and Mount Isa are just some of the destinations along the chosen route from Adelaide to Cairns, which takes in 3800kms in just seven days.
But Martin said the rally was a top event and he and Emily, who comprise team ‘Without a Paddle’, wouldn’t miss the opportunity.
“You meet some great people on the rally and develop lifelong relationships,” he said.
“We first heard about it on Triple J and just wanted to become involved.
“We previously completed the rally in an ED Falcon and were keen to go again.”
Martin said the rally was not a race, but rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable, which was to drive cars worth $1000 or less across some of Australia’s most arduous roads.
He believed they had just the car in which to achieve the feat.
“We found it on eBay for $400 and all it had wrong was a blown head gasket,” he said.
“It’s mechanically very good.
“The previous owner is now deceased and the car has sentimental value to the family.
“They are pleased it’s going on an adventure.”
Martin emphasised there is a serious side to their efforts, too.
“Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another,” he said.
“Whether it be parents, family, close friends … cancer has touched us all.”
The rally is one of the single biggest fund-raisers in Australia for the Cancer Council.
