Yorta Yorta woman Meena Singh has been appointed in a new role as Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People in the Victorian Government.
Ms Singh is a highly experienced director, senior consultant and lawyer bringing more than 20 years’ experience in the legal profession and human rights sector into the role.
She has served as Legal Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Rights unit at the Human Rights Law Centre and worked with Djirra, a not-for-profit organisation that provides support to Aboriginal women who are experiencing or have experienced family violence.
Outgoing Commissioner Justin Mohamed tackled the over-representation of Aboriginal children in the child protection and youth justice systems and prioritised connection to family, community, culture and Country in his term, a role now handed onto Ms Singh.
“Ms Singh brings with her skills, experience and passion that will carry forward our nation leading work to ensure the rights of Aboriginal children and young people in Victoria are protected and respected,” Minister for Child Protection Anthony Carbines said.
Ms Singh will serve as Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People until 23 April 2027.
