Students bowl them all over

Monbulk Secondary College Monbulk Secondary College

STUDENTS from Monbulk Secondary College have been hitting the greens to compete in their annual inter-house bowling competition.
Finals day was played in bright sunshine on Friday, 25 November, with a total of 24 students supervised and assisted by about a dozen members of the Monbulk Bowling Club.
Over the past four weeks, Monbulk College’s four houses of Red, Green, Blue and Gold have been playing out a tradition that began last year and looks set to continue for many more.
Club president Alan Dobie said the primary objective was to get more young people involved in the sport.
“We already have two students and teachers as members, so we’re on target to reach our objective.
“For a long time lawn bowls has been regarded as old man’s marbles, but some of the best bowlers in the country are teenagers.
“We’ve been aware we’re lacking in young members for some time, and we’re consciously trying to correct that,” Mr Dobie said.
A perpetual trophy was awarded to Red, the winning house, while medals were given to the winning boy and girl.
Emily Simek beat the other girls to the top spot, while Mitchell Meadows emerged as the alpha male.
Mr Dobie said the competition was a resounding success.
“We felt we were assisting the community and, above all, the students enjoyed it.
“The behaviour of the students was exemplary, and it was a good opportunity for the generations to interact,” Mr Dobie said.
