Rail trail upgrades

Yarra Ranges Council has continued upgrades along the Belgrave Rail Trail throughout 2024 as part of the Shared Use Path Upgrade Program.

This initiative is part of the broader effort to enhance the safety and usability of the area’s existing shared walking and cycling networks.

Recent and ongoing works include the completion of a pedestrian refuge on Main Street Upwey, construction of a new concrete path along Burwood Highway from Main Street to Glenfern Road, a connecting path on Campbell Street, Tecoma, overhanging vegetation clearance and new trail line marking.

“We are committed to promoting health through cycling and walking within our community,” said Streeton Ward Councillor Andrew Fullagar.

“Upgrading these paths will ensure they meet standards, providing safer and more accessible routes for all users,” he said.

Belgrave Rail Trail follows the Belgrave Railway Line from Ringwood including the historic route of Puffing Billy between Upper Ferntree Gully and Belgrave.

Funding for this project has been secured through a combination of council and Federal Government initiatives like the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

Cr Fullagar said Yarra Ranges Council is thrilled to see this project come to fruition.

“The upgrades will not only enhance the usability of these paths but also encourage more people to walk and cycle, which is beneficial for both health and the environment,” he said.

Further improvements planned involve upgraded signage, vegetation management, drainage, and the installation of safety barriers.

Cr Fullagar said this is just the first phase of the Belgrave Rail Trail renewal.”

“Our goal is to continuously improve this trail for community safety and enjoyment,” he said.
