ECH manages adversity

Emerald Community House continues to re-invent, re-create and renew its programs and enterprises in 2022.

Childcare programs for occasional and out of school hours remain popular and are in demand.

Our adult education programs will include ceramic arts and renewable energy topics along with the ever popular permaculture design course, computer course and programs for people with disabilities.

Check out Emerald Messenger for program updates and community stories.

The recently opened Dig In Community Grocery, with support from DHHS has enjoyed huge community support, providing produce and non-perishables, along with handmade products made by local suppliers. Situated in the National Trust-listed old Emerald bakehouse and operating totally off grid, the grocery is part of the dress circle of Emerald business area and is accessible via Murphys Way between the Commonwealth Bank and the Emerald Medical Centre. There is hope that a gate can be installed with access to the parking lot next to the Post Office building.

The Children’s Hobby Garden project at ECH, funded by Vic Health, is brimming with produce, herbs and edible flowers. Planted out in sustainable wicking beds made by Dan the Veggie Man, much of the produce goes directly to the Dig In Grocery. No transport required!

While Covid and climate continue to throw challenges our way, we remain flexible and agile to deal with the relentless adversities. Recent grants have equipped ECH with three generators for our three buildings to ensure that we can continue to operate regardless of extreme weather events.

We continue to provide food from Food Bank at over 700 kilos a month. Anyone who needs food can access our food supplies from our front veranda at 358 Belgrave Gembrook Road. Frozen food is by arrangement.
