MONBULK veterinarian Andrew Byrne is encouraging all pet owners to take the opportunity to have their pets micro-chipped.
Mr Byrne said registering and getting identification for a lost animal has never been so easy.
He said micro-chipping technology had come a long way since he started performing the procedure 15 years ago.
“Since then, the microchip concept has progressed to become such that almost every dog and cat that walks into a veterinary clinic these days has an identification microchip between its shoulders,” he said.
Mr Byrne said lost and found pets handed over to the local council or animal control officers are quickly identifiable and reunited with their owners.
He said there is now one standard microchip type.
“Over the years, there has been a number of different microchips on the market and a number of scanners for reading the identification number,” he said.
Mr Byrne said there will also be regulations coming into place in the next year that will ensure the implantations of microchips will be uniform and easy to use.
