THE region’s cultural horizons have broadened after the announcement of a State Government grant for Upwey’s Burrinja Gallery.
Arts Minister Mary Delahunty and Monbulk MP James Merlino announced the $64,500 grant to the Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre last Wednesday.
The funding will enable the centre to employ a professional in residence to develop, deliver and promote cultural programs.
Mr Merlino said the new post would focus on attracting and engaging people who may not have traditionally participated in arts activities.
“This post will further the gallery’s fantastic work, raising cross-cultural awareness and promoting respect for indigenous and contemporary art and culture,” he said.
Burrinja executive officer Ross Farnell said the funding provided for a 12-month post, with the successful candidate given a high degree of autonomy to write, implement and develop programs to develop the gallery.
Dr Farnell said it would be ideal to have an indigenous person to fill the position, or someone with a very strong background in indigenous arts, galleries and exhibitions.
“We’re doing a local search and putting it out nationally and through indigenous networks to find the right person for the job,” he said.
Dr Farnell said the centre hoped to fill the position soon, though it had not set a definite timeframe.
“The most important thing is to find the right person,” he said.
Ms Delahunty said the Community Liaison Officers and Professionals-in-Residence program was designed to increase arts and cultural opportunities and networks in regional and outer metropolitan communities.
“Through programs like this, the Bracks Government is ensuring that all Victorians, wherever they live, have access to the arts,” she said.
