FORMER Kilsyth Cobras Youth League player Joel Naburgs played the best game of his four-year college career on his 23rd birthday last Friday.
Naburgs, who played domestic basketball for local team the Eastern Eagles, is playing college basketball for Stetson University in the United States.
On Tuesday Naburgs’ hard work was rewarded by being named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Naburgs scored a career high 27 points, while leading the Stetson men’s basketball team to a crucial 80-71 victory over second place Florida Gulf Coast on 22 February, to keep the Hatters in third place.
The senior added seven rebounds, six assists and turned the ball over just once.
Also named College Sports Madness A-Sun Player of the Week on Monday, Naburgs is averaging 9.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in a solid senior campaign. He and the rest of the Hatters have just two regular season games remaining before Stetson heads the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The team has not been to the A-Sun Championships since the year before Naburgs arrived on campus.
Kilsyth Cobras director of basketball operations Rod Popp congratulated Naburgs on his success.
“Having coached Joel at Kilsyth and knowing the effort that he has put forward to be a player of this calibre, we are very proud of his accomplishments at Stetson,” he said.
