With temperatures set to soar and strong winds forecast across the state this weekend, resident in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges are urged to take care and be mindful of the weather conditions.
Forest Fire Management Victoria Chief Fire Officer Darrin McKenzie said, “Our firefighters are on standby ready to respond and we are asking the public to stay informed given the hot and windy weather ahead.”
“Fire Danger Ratings are forecast to reach severe in many parts of the state, with Total Fire Bans already declared for some districts on Saturday.
“These weather conditions mean any fires that start will be much harder to control.
“We strongly urge the community to consider the value of visiting local forests or parks during periods of high and extreme heat as they can be extremely dangerous under these conditions.
“Walking or riding in high temperatures can lead to heat stress. Some simple ways to avoid heat stress is to avoid walking during the hottest part of the day and drinking plenty of water.”
“It’s also vital to check to see if a Total Fire Ban is in place for your area. All campfires, fires for warmth or personal comfort are banned during Total Fire Ban Days. Solid and liquid fuel barbecues and ovens (including hangis) are also banned during Total Fire Ban Days.
“The hot weather conditions mean it is vital for people to know what they can and can’t around campfires and BBQs.
“Escaped campfires cause around 10% of bushfires. Follow the rules and don’t let your campfire become a bushfire this summer.
“This hot weather also limits our capacity to undertake planned burns and there are there are no planned burns scheduled for this weekend.”
Parks Victoria Acting Director Fire and Emergency Ty Caling said visitors should check weather conditions and the Parks Victoria website before venturing into parks this weekend.
“Our parks are great places to enjoy nature, but with strong winds forecast over the weekend, visitors should take care as there is a risk of fires starting or trees falling,” said Mr Caling. “Always check weather conditions before going walking or riding and keep out of closed sections of parks for your own safety.”
“Saturday’s forecast Severe fire danger rating for the Melbourne area is likely to close some parks, including the Dandenong Ranges, Warrandyte State Park and parts of Plenty Gorge Parklands. Visit parks.vic.gov.au for more information on closures and changes to conditions.”
