A Montrose 10-year-old is helping to keep the Dandenongs safe from fire.
The Basin Primary School student raised $250 for the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade.
“It was for a school project and it’s now become a thing,” she said.
By that, she means she’ll now continue her efforts with a trivia night in September or October, with a lofty $1000 goal.
“I think it’s good and it helps out my community,” she said.
Mia, softly spoken, chose the brigade because “Mum and Dad have known them form basketball and Dad grew up in the hills”.
She’s also supporting the nearby Willowbrooke Aged Care Home.
Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade Captain Peter Smith welcomed the donation.
He said it would go towards upgrading the brigade’s two fire trucks.
That project will cost about $120,000 “but every bit helps”.
The brigade is always looking for new recruits, as well as donations.
