Support package launched

Cardinia Shire will support small businesses through the Covid-19 crisis. At the Great Australian Bakehouse Lyn, Molly and Alana continue to feed the community.

Cardinia Shire Council has announced the first phase of its Community and Business Support Package: COVID-19.

The first phase of the package includes a range of support initiatives to help community and business to cope with the unprecedented effects of COVID-19.

Phase 1 support measures include fast tracking of approvals and compliance matters, temporary cessation of some fees and charges, a shop local campaign, business concierge services, and support for local contractors and rent relief options for those in Council properties.

Cardinia Shire Council has also launched its Coronavirus Online Help Hub, an online portal featuring links, fact sheets and videos on topics including support available for individuals and households, support available for businesses, what to do if you suspect you have the virus, how to protect yourself and others, family violence support and looking after your mental health.

The online help hub, accessed through Council’s website, is accompanied by a ‘call back’ option if community members would like a Council team member to contact them to assist in finding or understanding relevant support or information.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield said “we know people are doing it tough and we are keen to help our community get through this together and to provide some relief to our businesses and local economy”.

“I encourage anyone experiencing financial hardship to contact Council regarding your situation.

“As well as what we’re delivering in phase 1, we are also considering more support for our community and local households through our 2020–21 budget process.

“The further measures likely to be considered includes rate deferrals, and interest-free periods on outstanding rates and late payments. We look forward to bringing you more information on these in the coming days.”

Cr Springfield said Council was also actively working with the state and federal governments to strongly advocate for more ongoing support.

“Cardinia Shire Council is calling for greater community relief, recovery and support from all levels of government to complement the current commitments and responses government and Council have put in place in response to the COVID situation,” he said.

“We are a resilient community, and phase 1 of the package and the new online help hub is intended to help you in what is a stressful and challenging time for everyone.

“Let’s continue to support each other, our community and local business,” he said.
