When Cat Sloman opened her home wares and gift shop, Enchanted Pines, in Upwey late last year she had no idea that the challenges of small business would be magnified by a health crisis that would force the government to shut large parts of the economy.
With a few tweaks to her business model, Cat has managed to keep the doors of Enchanted Pines open much to the relief of locals who can still stop by for a takeaway coffee or tea while browsing the beautifully curated store.
“We are trading as usual observing the standard guidelines regarding social distancing,” explained Cat.
“Our coffee and tea is now takeaway only. I have had great support from customers who pop in while they are out for their walk. Everyone loves the fact they can still get their cuppa. It has become a highlight of the day.”
Cat said the sale of home wares had also picked back up as people spend more time at home decluttering and rearranging their living spaces.
And for those embracing time in the garden, Cat will soon have a range of seedlings and pots in stock.
She said customers were also continuing to buy gifts for loved ones and could phone in their order and have it posted free of charge ( standard postage only). Cat also offers free drop off delivery to Upwey and Boronia.
“I am working on having an online store, but at the moment if people see something on Instagram or Facebook I can post it out to them,” explained Cat.
“Anything I can do to help others I will. I feel like I can’t do much, but free postage is one thing I can do.”
Enchanted Pines also has a pay it forward coffee board allowing anyone who has lost their job or had their hours cut to enjoy a free takeaway coffee or tea.
Cat thanked everyone who had supported the business through this difficult time.
“I definitely had in my head that running a business would be hard and that there would be obstacles, but I definitely didn’t imagine this.
“I love working and seeing people every day so I am just happy we can still remain open.”
Enchanted Pines is open Tuesday 7.30am to 5pm, Wednesday 10.30am to 5pm and Saturday 9-3pm at 5 Main Street, Upwey. Phone O407 454 660.
