CFA units responded to a fire this morning at the Lilydale quarry on Melba Avenue.
At 9.20am, CFA received a number of 000 calls with concerns of black smoke coming from the quarry.
Three fire trucks from the local area responded to scene.
CFA Commander Brett Myers said upon arrival a 20 metre by 20 metre grass area was on fire, as well as some rubbish and discarded pipe off cuts which was causing the severe black smoke.
A perimeter has been set up around the fire which will burn throughout the day.
Due to the fire danger period being over, Mr Myers said quarry staff will manage the fire over the course of the day and a water tanker has been left onsite should the situation change.
CFA crews were in attendance for about an hour and have since returned to their headquarters.
Those travelling near the quarry should be mindful of smoke.
VicEmergency noted the fire to be under control at 9.42am.
