Two people die after tree falls on car

Two people have sadly died in Cockatoo this morning, 10 September, after a tree fell on their vehicle.

It is believed the pair were travelling along Woori Yallock Road around 10.30am when the tree fell and crushed the vehicle.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics were called to the scene around 10.35am but the occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.

Emerald SES unit controller Ben Owen confirmed two SES vehicles and four crews were also in attendance.

He said the SES will fulfil its role by assisting police in recovering the bodies of the two deceased persons throughout the day.

Woori Yallock Road has now been closed in both directions near Rainy Hill Road.

The Department of Transport has asked motorists to avoid the area between Belgrave-Gembrook Road and Avon Road and to follow the directions of emergency services.

Alternative roads including Macclesfield Road and Gembrook-Launching Place Road are open as a detour.

Woori Yallock Road will reopen when investigations are completed by Victoria Police.

Investigators will now prepare a report for the coroner.

More to come.
