Under 17 Olinda-Ferny Creek boys cement top four spot

It was a fantastic weekend of footy at home this weekend with seven games played over the day. Good old fashioned Olinda weather greeted our opponents for most of the morning with cloud and drizzle.

The U10s got the day underway with lots of excited and happy kids showing they’ll be the superstars of the club in years to come. I’m sure they can tell you the score and the goal kickers, even though there’s nothing officially recorded.

The U11s flexed their muscle and recorded another emphatic win against Wesburn with Sid Higgins booting four in his second game of the day. Coach Stuart also commended Saxon and Ethan for their work making good positions and competing against bigger opponents. They sit second on the ladder now and are really flying.

The U12 Girls team is really starting to develop as they learn the game. The team is growing every week. Super scoring from Maeve, Lucy and Lily and some really solid defensive efforts from Aaliyah and Jess in the second half saw them stay competitive against Healesville for most of the game.

The U13s trialled two teams this week in different divisions as they have really solid numbers. The “Red” team managed to eke out a draw against Woori which was a great effort given they were a little undermanned with the division of numbers. The “White” team played against a phenomenal Wesburn side but improved as the game progress and managed to slow the onslaught whilst scoring themselves in the second half. The coaches are worried young Jack Ford might be suffering from leather poisoning from how much he had the footy playing the U11s and U13s and winning so many possessions.

The U15 boys had another strong win against Wesburn and are sitting three games clear on top of the ladder in their division. They’re a tight unit and playing some great footy, although coach Scotty can always find room for improvement. They might find themselves in the Yarra division before long.

The U16 girls had a bye but many of them still came to celebrate Mother’s Day at our Family Night.

The U17 boys put on a great show in their tight game against Gembrook in difficult conditions. It was a tough game and Gembrook came with a plan for some of our better players, but our boys stood strong and supported each other to come home with the points. They are starting to come together as a team and over the last few weeks have found a way to win, despite being a mostly bottom age team. They sit in the top four and coach Paddy is happy that meeting the challenges of the last few weeks will give the boys belief that they can challenge any team.

The senior women had a well earned rest this weekend with a bye after two bruising matches in 5 days against Upwey and Pakenham. They’ll be firing up again this weekend to face Belgrave at Belgrave on Saturday evening.
