The Belgrave Food Garden will be holding the unveiling for this year’s Lantern Festival on Saturday June 25.
The space will also be dedicated to kid’s crafts, giveaways, talks, live music and more on the day from 3:30pm to 8:00pm behind the Cameo Cinemas and Inspiro Health.
“We’re going to have the bunting up, we’re going to have lights, it’s going to be very festive. We’ll also be giving out some free packs of seeds that people can take home and grow their own projects,” Belgrave Food Garden Head of Committee Ellie McSheedy said.
“We will also be serving some delicious mulled apple juice to warm anyone up who comes to visit us,” Ellie said.
The garden, which was formed in late 2021, seeks to teach children the importance of gardening skills and how reducing waste can be beneficial for the environment.
A number of local producers and growers have donated plants to the community group since its opening, and Ellie said the lantern festival is another example of how the community’s “generosity of spirit” comes to life.
“This time of year, it’s the 12 month anniversary from the storms that we experienced [in] the hills, so I think there is a lot of healing to happen and [it’s] something to celebrate as well,” she said.
Yarra Ranges Council has supported the event, and Deputy Mayor Councillor Johanna Skelton will be unveiling the project.
