A quiet suburban street was upended after a specialised police unit executing a warrant found a suspicious device on the property.

Officers from the Illicit Firearms Squad attended the property on Anderson Street at 5pm on Thursday 7 July to execute a warrant and were still present on Friday 8 July.

A woman who lives at the property said police searched a separate unit downstairs where her son lives and she doesn’t know where he is, but believed he “might be hiding at a mate’s place.”

A man who lives at the property said the son “likes to tinker with fireworks and that sort of thing”.

A resident of Anderson Street said the police were present overnight at the property. Another nearby resident reported hearing a bang around 1.15pm on Friday 8 July.

The Illicit Firearms Squad investigates the manufacturing and trafficking of illicit firearms, including those linked to organised crime groups and gangs.

Victoria Police said after a “suspect device was located” during the search the Bomb Response Unit was called to handle the situation. Police dogs were also seen on the property.

A Victoria Police member said she expected police to be on the scene for a few more hours.

“While nobody has been evacuated at this time, we have spoken to immediate neighbours and asked them to remain indoors.” a police spokesperson said earlier.
