Problem trenches in Cockatoo filled by Cardinia Shire Council

Further works will take place on Alexander Road in Cockatoo, after large trenches on the road were filled by Cardinia Shire Council over the weekend.

In a statement to the Star Mail, a Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson said the council was made aware of the trenches on Friday 2 September, after a report was made.

The spokesperson said hazard signs were placed on the road on Friday afternoon before officers attended on Saturday morning to “rectify the defect.”

“The trenches were filled with crushed rock. Further works to grade the road have been scheduled,” the spokesperson said.

“Council will regularly inspect the road over the coming weeks.”

Photos of the damage were originally posted on the Friends of Cockatoo Facebook page, with nearly 200 reactions from members.

There are 862 kilometres of unsealed roads in Cardinia Shire.

The spokesperson said roads throughout the shire are maintained through the grading and maintenance, resheeting and drainage works programs.

“We schedule works into a road maintenance program based on predictive modelling, proactive inspections, and the reports you make,” the spokesperson said.

“Potholes can develop quickly where the road pavement is softened, particularly when water has soaked into the road. To remove potholes, we either grade the road or manually fill potholes with gravel.”

Cardinia Council will undertake an inspection of the road network in the shire on Monday 19 September for approximately four weeks.
