Sassafras has become the site of a landslide after rainfall saw the Yarra Ranges experience flooding across the region with roads closed and trees down all over the shire.

The landslide happened at Mount Dandenong Tourist Road/Mason Grove in Sassafras.

SES media said Emerald Unit volunteers attended a reported landslide at Mt Dandenong Tourist Road on Tuesday morning.

“They assessed the scene before handing it to VicRoads,” said the SES representative.

VicEmergency posted to social media at 1.57pm that emergency services were on scene and traffic management was in place.

An update just before 6pm on Tuesday advised that the road was closed in both directions between Mason Grove and Lennox Grove.

Access to the Sassafras Shopping Village and Sassafras Primary School was still available.

People are advised to stay informed and to stay away from the area or if travelling to Olinda to consider using the Burwood Highway, Monbulk Road and Olinda-Monbulk Road, with detour delays expected to add significant time to the journey.

The slope may continue to move for hours or days afterwards.
