Rural Advisory Committee seeking new members

The Yarra Ranges Rural Advisory Committee (RAC) is seeking new members to contribute to shaping the future of agriculture in the region. Since its establishment in 2016, the committee has played a key role in representing local farmers and advising Council on rural issues.

The RAC provides a vital platform for local farmers and industry representatives to voice their concerns, offer solutions, and consult to Council on a range of issues impacting the agricultural and rural sector.

Members of the RAC meet quarterly to discuss important issues to the region, such as pest management, animal control, and agricultural policies. Notably, the committee has successfully addressed matters such as the removal of planning permits required for hail netting, and advocating for the needs of farmers in the region.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Jim Child, said that since the RAC began operation in 2016, the committee had made a great impact on the Yarra Ranges.

“This committee has always done a wonderful job in amplifying the voices, perspectives and priorities of residents from our agricultural sector to be heard in Council and beyond,” Cr Child said.

“They have really guided us on a range of important issues in the past, including areas like biosecurity, climate-related issues and worker accommodation on farms.

“If you’d like to add your voice to these important issues and others, and fit the selection criteria we’re looking for, I strongly encourage you to apply.”

Expressions of interest are currently being sought across the following industry sectors:

• Stone Fruit Growing

• Berry Fruit Growing (strawberries)

• Grape growing (wine grapes)

• Rural Service Provider

• Landcare Australia

Len Rayner from Rayner’s Orchard in Woori Yallock recently stepped down as a member, after representing stone fruit growers for many years and has spoken highly of the committee.

“Farmers seem to be neglected sometimes, we’ve got city people making rules and regulations for us that are just not suitable, and the Shire actually listens, which is a bit scary, and they even take action, which is even scarier,” he said.

“I don’t know too many other shires that actually listen to farmers and take note quite like this, it’s very encouraging. There are representatives from each section, and there’s always room for a few more… so if anyone out there wants to get involved they can get in touch with the Shire, it’s not a difficult process.”

Don’t miss out on your chance to be part of an important local initiative that helps shape the regions agricultural sector. Expressions of interest close Monday 3 March.
