South East Water’s Ben Evans has been named the 2025 Water Industry Operations Association (WIOA) Victorian Operator of the Year, recognised for his outstanding service, leadership and dedication to the water industry across an impressive 37-year career.

From his early days as a trainee with the Pakenham Water Board in 1988, to his current role as lead operator overseeing six wastewater treatment plants, Mr Evans’ commitment to operational excellence and safety has remained unwavering.

A calm and capable leader, Mr Evans is known for his hands-on approach, extensive industry knowledge and willingness to go above and beyond to keep services running smoothly for customers and the environment – no matter the challenge.

South East Water managing director, Lara Olsen said Mr Evans’ recognition is a proud moment for the organisation.

“Ben embodies everything that’s great about our organisation and our industry – reliability, teamwork and a deep sense of responsibility in delivering for our customers and community,” Ms Olsen said.

Throughout his career, Mr Evans has championed continuous improvement, completing more than 40 industry training programs, from biological nutrient removal and algae control to frontline management.

Whether isolating assets for safe maintenance, responding to emergency situations, or pulling together the team for a Friday barbecue, Mr Evans’ leadership is grounded in people, safety and service.

“I was very humbled by the win, and I feel very honoured,” Mr Evans said.

“I would like to thank my Westernport Team and the Peninsula Team but also the great support we receive from Carolyn Madden, our Tech Support and Works and Services Team.”
