The friendly rivalry between the Rotary Clubs of Berwick and Monbulk was reignited once more as the two clubs gathered for the 53rd annual Funno’s Fours Lawn Bowls Night on Wednesday 28 May, held at the Berwick Bowling Club.
A cherished tradition dating back to the early 1970s, the event traces its roots to a conversation between milkman Allan Funston (known as Funno) and butcher Bob Gray. They thought it would be a good way to promote fellowship between their respective Rotary Clubs of Berwick and Monbulk.
What began as a light-hearted challenge between friends has grown into a much-loved fixture on both clubs’ calendars—promoting fellowship, fun, and community connection.
While Monbulk claimed the trophy yet again this year, the real winners were those who enjoyed a night of laughter, light-hearted competition, and shared stories.
“The uniqueness is seeing 60–70-year-olds still being able to join active involvement in the community,” Friend of Rotary Monbulk, Ken Utting said.
“A few people tonight played bowls for the first time and enjoyed themselves. I always say to beginners, bowls is just the medium—it’s about getting out, socialising, laughing and exercising. Tomorrow they can lay on the couch all day if they want to—they’ve earned it.”
The event drew a strong turnout, with many attendees returning year after year to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. And while lawn bowls may have been the main event, the hearty dinner served was equally unforgettable.
The Inner Wheel Club of Berwick once again proudly catered for the bi-annual Rotary Bowls Night, continuing a cherished tradition that supports the charitable causes championed by our club.
“This longstanding fundraiser has always been a highlight of our calendar, bringing together fellowship, fun, and a shared commitment to giving back to the community,” Inner Wheel committee shared.
“While we did encounter a few challenges with kitchen equipment, the team pulled together with good spirit and resilience to ensure everything ran smoothly.
“The camaraderie in the kitchen and around the venue made the evening especially enjoyable. We were heartened to receive warm feedback from many guests, with several commenting on how much they appreciated the meal.”
As the bowls were packed away and the last plates cleared, the night stood as a heartwarming reminder that community, camaraderie, and a little friendly competition never go out of style.
