Young stars battle for top spots in junior grades

The King’s Birthday weekend is set aside for interleague matches and saw all clubs have a bye. For the Juniors the season is now a little over the halfway mark in the home and away season, with eight rounds having been played and another six to go before finals.

The Auskickers have been learning their skills on Friday evenings while the Under 9s and Under 10s kick the dew off the grass early on Sunday mornings. Although the players are competitive there is no scoring in their matches. There are 23 teams amongst the Under 9s from 14 clubs. Mt. Evelyn and Emerald field three sides while Belgrave, Wesburn, Healesville, Wandin and Woori Yallock have two each. In the Under 10s there are 16 teams from the same 14 clubs, with Mt. Evelyn and Monbulk fielding two each.

From Under 11s to Under 14s there are competitions for mixed or girls teams, while above Under 14s they are either boys or girls teams. The main age groups are U10, U12, U14, U16 for Mixed or Boys teams and U11, U13, U15 and U17 for the Girls.

In the Under 11s Girls there are 7 teams competing. Ladder leaders Olinda-Ferny Creek have the two leading goalkickers with Billie James-Hodge (17) and Ruby Thornton (12). There are 8 teams in the Under 11 Mixed grade. Parker Van Der Vlugt of Wesburn leads the goalkicking with 13, followed by Gus Tesoriero of Mt. Evelyn and Koby Uden of Wesburn on 11. There are 12 teams in the Under 13 Girls, with Pippa Congreve of Healesville leading the goalkicking on 19, followed by Harlow Newing of Wesburn on 16. Under 14s Mixed sees 11 teams competing. Goalkickers: Casey Symonds (Healesville) is on 29, ahead of Kobe Pitrelli (Mt. Evelyn) 28 and Jack Ford (Olinda-Ferny Creek) on 22. Under 15 Girls have 8 teams in their number. Marley Rayner of Wesburn leads the goalkicking with 19, followed by Healesville’s Miley Thomson and Summer Caldicott who are both on 13. Ladder: Mt. The Under 16s Boys are split into two divisions, with the leading six clubs being in the Yarra Division and the other 8 in the Ranges Division. Healesville, Upwey-Tecoma and Wandin have a team in each division.

Harry Tingay of Upwey-Tecoma is out in front of the goalkicking in Yarra with 35. He is followed by Jackson Foletta of Wandin on 23 and Billie Laird (Mt. Evelyn), Samual Anderson (Wandin) and Mitchell Upton (Wandin) all on 22. Ladder: Wandin (8, 0, 0, 0), Upwey-Tecoma (4, 4, 0, 0), Mt.
