Bowler bounces into history

By STEVE BROWN

FERNTREE Gully footballers captain and last season’s Feaver Medallist Nick Bogar produced one of the great spells of bowling.
Bogar has become the 14th player in 67 years to take nine wickets in an innings in the competition’s top division.
More importantly the medium pacer’s figures of 9/67 from 23 overs enabled the Griffins to snatch an unlikely win over reigning premiers, Johnson Park, by 18 runs at Picket Reserve to complete round three of the Reeves Shield.
The Sharks chasing a modest 174 were powerless against Bogar who had the ball on a string in conditions suitable for the bowlers.
The last player to claim nine wickets in an innings was South Belgrave’s Stephen Lee with 9/49 against The Basin in 1988.
Eildon Park (7/283) held off Belgrave which had an opening stand of 70 before former Premier leg spinner Cam Cosstick entered the scene tying up one end and steadily taking wickets.
Cosstick finished with figures of 6/77 from 28 overs while wicket keeper Luke Rose was unbeaten on 63 when the final wicket fell on 219.
Upwey Tecoma (245) had the best of the batting conditions defeating Knox Gardens by 69 runs that are relying heavily on openers Shannon Small (40) and Jarrod Butcher (36), but it was the Tigers duo of Sam Waters (4/44) and Leigh Bianchi (3/39) that held all the aces.
At Carrington Park, Ferntree Gully received a fright, chasing Knoxfield’s paltry 126.
Experienced bowlers, Scott McKenzie and Trentin Scholfield almost pulled off a miraculous win only to be denied by Blues opening batsman Jayden Bradbury whose unbeaten half century was enough to win, with only one wicket in the bank.
McKenzie ended the day with 5/43 however he would have traded places with the winners.
In the final game, Monbulk could not find the winners’ circle losing its third tight contest in a row, having been set 186 by Upper Gully, the Hawks were dismissed 13 runs short.
Monbulk champion Jason Fraser continued his great form with 55 to go with his five wickets last week.
Fraser received good support from Tom Watson (48) while David Goodger keeps swinging the ball grabbing four wickets for the Kings.
