THE Foresters Venturer Unit – comprising members from Belgrave, Kallista, Upwey and surrounding areas – recently spent the weekend rock climbing in the Grampians.
With the assistance of the Scouts Victoria Rock Climbing team, the group scaled some sheer cliffs, and took the odd tumble, but dusted themselves off and went again.
Rock climbing is one of the many adventurous activities available to Venturer Scouts (ages 14 to 17; boys and girls).
Unit leader Michael Walker said over the past three years, there has been huge growth in Scouting.
“In the past year, we’ve been hiking, climbing, canoeing, shooting, cross country snow touring and made use of many opportunities as part of our program,” he said.
“And the best thing is you get to do it with your mates.”
Mr Walker said Venturers was open for anyone interested.
“It’s not all knots and hiking,” he said.
“Currently, three of our members are in Switzerland as part of an Australian contingent experiencing the International Scouting Centre and having an absolute blast.”
Apart from international opportunities, there are numerous local, state and national events that the group attends.
Venturers meet on Mondays, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, during school terms.
