Work has started on the $2.5 million Burrinja Cultural Centre redevelopment in Upwey.
The development will see the beloved local facility get a modern facelift and increase gallery, performance and function space.
Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino, representing Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek, announced the start of construction on 14 June.
“The Burrinja Cultural Centre is a place where all members of our diverse, vibrant community can come together and develop long-lasting bonds from a young age,” Mr Merlino said.
“I’ve supported Burrinja since its inception and am proud to see this further development of our much loved Cultural Centre.”
The project received $1.25 million from the 2017-18 round of the Andrews Labor Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, which supports the creation of critical local infrastructure for communities in Melbourne’s diverse and fast-growing outer suburbs.
The redevelopment will include a refurbishment of the foyer, artist studios, gallery space, cafe/music venue and a bar.
The major refurbishment of the first floor will also include the update of the performance space along with the kitchen area and a disabled bathroom.
The project will be delivered by the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, which has also contributed $1.25 million towards the project.
Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek said the Growing Suburbs Fund has invested more than $17 million into the Yarra Ranges Shire Council.
“The Andrews Labor Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund provides crucial community infrastructure such as sports facilities, community centres, playgrounds and town centres for newer and growing suburbs in Melbourne’s outer reaches,” he said.
“This is about helping fast growing communities get the facilities they need to continue thriving as their population increases.”
