Victoria Police investigated after man dies in custody

A man has died after being arrested and pepper sprayed by Victoria Police.

Police were called to a disturbance in Boronia Road, Wantirna on 14 January after reports of an assault.

Police arrived at the scene where they were confronted by an aggressive man and deployed OC spray to make an arrest.

The 41-year-old Ferntree Gully man was taken to Boronia Police Station about 2.30pm where his physical condition deteriorated.

He was transported to hospital by ambulance where he later died.

The Homicide Squad will investigate the death, with oversight from Professional Standards Command.

This is standard protocol when a person has died in police custody.
