Red poppies bathed the streets of Emerald on Thursday 11 November as Remembrance Day was commemorated by local RSL members and ex-service personnel.
RSL members spent time in the lead up decorating the streets in red, using spare poppies from the 20,000 that were made for the 100 year anniversary of the end of WWI in 2018.
Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said the town didn’t need signs anymore to let everyone know it was time to commemorate Remembrance Day.
“It’s part of the tradition now in Emerald to decorate the town at Remembrance Day and Anzac Day,” he said.
“We’re really pleased with how it looks.”
Poppies were also sold as part of the 2021 RSL Poppy Appeal, which Mr Maloney expects to bring in $5000 from sales in the community.
A service was held at the cenotaph at 11am, which included a live bugler and wreath laying.
It was livestreamed by local media company OBG Productions, which proved popular among residents.
“It was well received,” Mr Maloney said.
“We’d be looking at doing it again it was so successful.”
