Voices of Casey, the community-based political action group, will name a candidate for the 2022 federal election by the end of February.
At a forum on 8 February, Voices of Casey spokesperson Fionn Bowd announced with applications now closed, an event was planned for the 20 February where community members would be able to meet the chosen candidate.
Ms Bowd told the Star Mail on 9 February the process would involve a panel interview of applicants and a mock press conference, however the official launch will happen by the 27 February at the latest.
“We’re not disclosing the exact number of interested parties, but they’ve been of a high calibre,” she said.
“We’ve had enough eligible applicants to progress to to the next stage of selecting a candidate.”
Voices of Casey has held two community events so far: A meet and greet information night on 27 January and a community forum with 2007 Australian of the Year Tim Flanney and former Indi independent MP Cathy McGowan.
At the forum, Ms McGowan said 22 Voices groups have put forward candidates for the federal election.
“It’s doesn’t work when your ego gets in the way and when you think it’s about you,” she said.
“You have to get out of your own way.”
Mr Flannery said the current makeup of federal parliament needs to change to address issues like climate change.
“The will of the people in not being represented in parliament.” he said.
